Our Flaws Make Us, Us

Our Flaws Make Us, Us

For much of my life, I believed that flaws were something to hide or fix. Whether it was in my art, my relationships, or how I saw myself, I felt this constant pressure to smooth out the rough edges, to present a polished version of myself to the world. But the more I tried to cover up these imperfections, the more disconnected I felt—from my true self, from others, and from the joy of simply being.

It wasn’t until I started embracing my flaws that I began to see them differently. Instead of seeing them as shortcomings, I began to see them as the things that make me uniquely human. My quirks, my mistakes, the parts of me that don’t fit the mould—these are the things that tell my story. They’re the evidence of a life lived, of risks taken, of lessons learned.

Embracing our flaws isn’t about giving up or not striving to be better. It’s about recognizing that perfection isn’t the goal—authenticity is. When we allow ourselves to be seen, flaws and all, we connect more deeply with others and with ourselves. We create space for growth, for compassion, and for a deeper understanding of what it means to be human.

In my own life, I’ve found that the more I embrace my flaws, the more I grow. Each mistake is a lesson, each imperfection a reminder that I’m still learning, still evolving. And that’s okay. In fact, it’s beautiful. The cracks in our armour let the light in, and it’s in those moments of vulnerability that we find our true strength.

Are flaws make us, us. Here’s to the imperfections that tell our stories, that shape our lives, and that connect us to each other. Embrace them, celebrate them, and remember that it’s our flaws that make us beautifully, wonderfully human.

Creative Challenge: The Worry Tree

The Worry Tree is an art therapy exercise that allows you to externalize your worries/flaws by attaching them to a tree and then symbolically releasing them. As you remove each worry/flaw, you’ll replace it with a positive trait or strength, transforming your tree into a symbol of resilience and personal growth.

Draw Your Tree:

Start by drawing a large tree with branches on a blank sheet of paper. Leave plenty of space on the branches for leaves.

Identify Your Worries/Flaws:

On a piece of paper, draw leaves and write your worries or perceived flaws inside each one—anything that’s been weighing heavily on your mind.

Attach the Leaves:

Cut out each leaf and attach it to your tree. Take a moment to acknowledge each perceived flaw as you place it on the branches.

Release the Worries:

One by one, remove the leaves from your tree. As you remove each leaf, visualize releasing that worry or flaw from your life. Feel the weight lifting as you let go.

Replace with Strengths:

For each leaf you remove, replace it with a new one that represents a strength or positive trait you want to cultivate. Attach these new leaves to your tree.

Step back and observe your transformed tree. Reflect on how it feels to have released your flaws and replaced them with strengths.

Freebie

This week’s freebie is a special affirmation card I designed to remind you of your inherent worth. The message, "I am enough exactly as I am," is a powerful reminder that you don’t need to change or perfect yourself to be deserving of love, kindness, and acceptance.

Hang this card somewhere you’ll see it often—by your workspace, on your bathroom mirror, or in your journal—and let it be a daily reminder that you are enough, just as you are.
