This week's newsletter is a bit shorter than usual because I've been struggling with burnout for a few months. My creative spark feels dim, and my drawing skills seem to have vanished. I’m hoping this week at the cottage with my family will help me relax and recoup. Nature has always been a sanctuary for me, and I’m looking forward to its big healing hug to rejuvenate my spirit. So, naturally this week's theme is very close to my heart: the healing power of nature.

As someone who deeply values the spiritual and emotional benefits of nature, I can’t emphasize enough how transformative it can be. Nature is not only where I go when I’m dealing with hard emotions and anxiety, but it's also my greatest source of inspiration for my art. When I walk through a forest, I constantly stop to touch and hug the trees. They feel like friends to me, providing a sense of comfort and connection. I speak to them and often times I find myself crying tears of happiness. These moments fill me with such a deep connection to the earth and the universe.

During particularly stressful periods, I make it a habit to take daily walks in the forest. Each walk feels like pressing a reset button, washing away my worries and bringing a sense of calm and clarity. The beauty of the trees, the chirping of birds, and the fresh air reminds me of the simple joys of life and the importance of staying connected to the natural world. This practice not only soothes my anxiety but also sparks countless ideas for my artwork.

Nature’s resilience is also inspiring. Observing how forests recover after fires and how plants thrive in harsh conditions reminds me of our own capacity for resilience. The changing seasons, with their cycles of growth, decay, and renewal, help me understand and accept the natural rhythms of life. Each season brings its own beauty and lessons, showing us that life is a continuous process of change and renewal.

Nature has an incredible ability to heal and rejuvenate us. Humans have an innate connection to nature, known as biophilia. Engaging with nature fulfills a deep-seated need, promoting emotional and psychological health. Noticing the details in a leaf, the sound of a stream, or the pattern of clouds draws us into the present moment. This mindfulness is essential for healing and resilience.

As I enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the cottage, I’m hopeful that nature’s healing power will rejuvenate my spirit and dissolve the burnout I’ve been feeling. With slow mornings sipping tea and gazing at the lake, lazy afternoons at the beach, and lots of family time, I aim to reset my mind and rekindle my creative spark. I look forward to returning refreshed and inspired, ready to create and share new art. Thank you for your understanding and support as I take this time to heal and find my way back to creativity.

I encourage you to take some time this week to step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and soak in the beauty of the natural world. Let it inspire you, calm your mind, and heal your soul. And if you’re feeling adventurous, try talking to the trees—they have a lot to say.

Creative Challenge: Nature Mandala

Creating a nature mandala is a wonderful way to connect with the natural world and engage in a meditative, creative activity. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create your own beautiful mandala using natural materials.

Take a walk in your garden, a park, or a forest, and collect natural items that catch your eye. Look for a variety of colours, shapes, and textures. Here are some ideas:

Find a flat, stable surface to create your mandala. This could be a patch of grass, a sandy area, or even a large flat stone.

Start by placing a central piece that will be the focal point of your mandala. This could be a large flower, a unique stone, or a pine cone. The central piece is the starting point from which you will build your design outward.

Begin to arrange your materials around the central piece in concentric circles. Work slowly and mindfully, placing each item with intention.

Aim to create a balanced and symmetrical design. This doesn’t mean everything has to be perfectly even, but try to distribute similar shapes and colors evenly around the centre.

Add smaller details to your mandala, like tiny seeds, pebbles, or petals. These can be used to fill in gaps or add intricate patterns to your design.

Once you’ve completed your mandala, take a moment to reflect on your creation. Notice how it makes you feel and the calmness it brings.

This week’s affirmation, "I am one with nature," is a gentle reminder of our deep connection to the natural world. Embracing this affirmation helps us find peace, balance, and a sense of belonging. It also encourages us to care for the earth, knowing that our well-being is linked to the health of our planet.

This affirmation is from my “I Am Powerful” card deck, designed to help children and adults embrace their power, creativity, and positive values like compassion and self-care. The deck includes 46 affirmations and practical activities, guiding kids to nurture themselves and make a positive impact.
